What is relationship coaching?

Relationship coaching is an alternative to traditional marriage counseling. It’s a specialized form of coaching with the purpose of helping people find greater understanding, happiness, and fulfillment in their relationships. Some of the many topics relationship coaching covers include increasing communication skills, improving one’s relationship mindset, and strategies to better one’s relationship.

Who exactly do you work with? Only married couples?

I specialize in working with married couples, particularly people in a second, third, etc. marriage. I also work with single people. If you have never been married, or you are divorced, one of the best things you can do is sign up for relationship coaching. It’s a terrific way to explore your relationship patterns, determine what you are looking for in a partner, and identify ways to improve the quality of your next significant relationship.

Is relationship coaching the same thing as marriage counseling or couples therapy?

No, it isn’t. Therapy usually delves into the past and focuses on emotional healing. While coaching may explore the past briefly to gather information about your relationship patterns and mindset, it tends to concentrate on what’s going on for you now, in the present, and how to improve it. Relationship coaching emphasizes results and solutions and is therefore very goals-oriented and action-based.

I don’t think my partner is willing to do relationship coaching. Will you still work with me alone?

Absolutely! There is so much territory we can cover together just the two of us, and it will have a positive impact on your relationship with or without your partner’s participation. You’d be surprised how much looking at your own mindset, communication skills, and behavior can fundamentally improve the quality of your relationship. And if your partner decides to join us down the road, so much the better! (That happens more often than you might think.)

Can you help me with other challenging relationships in my life like with a friend, co-worker, family member, or employer?

Yes, yes, yes, and yes! That’s the magic of relationship coaching. It is just as effective in improving a friendship as a romantic relationship. In fact, many clients notice that, once they start to work on the relationship that concerns them the most, their other relationships tend to dramatically improve without even focusing on them.
